>> good morning, everyone. it is 6:00 amezaga on saturday. thanks nor wakeping with us. i'm katie marzullo. we want to get you out the door with a quick first look at the weather. here's meteorologist lisa argen. >> good morning. here's a view from mt. tam. minimal fog. the official sunrise just happened. we are talking about temperatures really cool in the north bay, ranging from the upper 30s in napa, mid-40s

for santa rosa, but we are up to 50 with clear conditions livermore, union city and los gatos. pretty chili at 46. we begin the warmup today. the high pressure offshore begins to get a little closer to the coast so that fog this morning really getting evaporated quick. but we are still going to see the on shore winds keeping numbers today at our beaches pretty chilly. but elsewhere around the bay we are talking upper 60s to lower 70s. very pleasant and just a few 80s in our inland east bay. look closer and more numerous tomorrow. the warming trend continues into the early portion of next week. i'll tell you how much warmer and we are going to talk about high fire danger too and the bay to breakers all coming up in a little bit. katie. >> lisa, thank you. san jose police are looking for a carjacker whose victim jumped out of the moving car. it happened yesterday at 4:30:00 in the morning at denny's on blossom hill road. abc7 news reporter centeringio

reports. >> reporter: these are two photos of the man police say attack a customer just as she arrived at the denny's restaurant. >> runs up to her driver's side door, force his way into the car and pushes her over and basically fleece. >> he sped down the road but the victim jumped out of the car going about 40 miles an hour. she was pretty banged up. road rash and sitting the ground from rolling. these are pretty significant injuries. you can imagine the emotion natural fear that was done. >> she made it back to denny's and called the police. one regular customer of the restaurant said he's surprised to hear it happened. >> my son walks from here to oak ridge all the time and i cut through here all the time. that's quite alarming to me. >> police say the man ditched the victim's vehicle in the neighborhood. the suspect is described as about 28 to 25 years old, standing about 5'7", weighing in 150 pounds. anyone who knows this man should call san jose police.

in san jose, abc7 news. >> developing new in newark. police shot a man who officers say came out of the house shooting at them. he was rushed to the lot hospital with life-threatening gunshot wounds. this is the scene where investigators are gathering evidence. family members called police around 6:00 last night. they were concerned about the man's mental state and the fact he had several guns. while police were talking to him from outside the house, they heard several shots fired inside. he then came out of the house shooting at the officers. they returned fire, hitting him at least once. >> we now know the names of the two men shot to death on 880 in downtown oakland thursday night. relatives provided us this picture of terrence marks and

christopher beardon taken during thursday night's warrors game hours before he side. beardon had season tickets and took marks as his guest. several bullets hit his porsche and they believe marks was targeted. detectives want to know if something at the game might have trigger the shooting. they are now reviewing surveillance take place from oracle arena and 880. and police want to know how a grenade came to be in a lead's garage. the police detonated it last night. they blew it up last night just before six. a woman told police she found it in her garage yesterday afternoon on clover crest drive. bomb experts weren't sure it was alive and they destroyed it just in case. they don't believe it was planted in the garage in an attempt to cause harm. members of occupy the farm plan to return to albany today to tend to the crops they planted on u.c - owned land. the plot at marijuana and sanpal

tract. they detained people monday morning last week after they camped on the weekend. they were detained for 60 hours without being charged. the protesters object to plans to build a supermarket on the site. they want it retain for farmland, research and crop growing. work has been suspended following the death of a long shoreman. sky 7hd was over the scene yesterday afternoon shortly after the unidentified employee drove his white pickup truck into san francisco bay. the man who had worked at the port for 47 years was helping direct the placement of containers when the accident happened. tens of thousands of trees are on the chopping block in the east bay. neighbors have a final chance to speak out about the project that will eliminate about 80,000 trees from the east bay hills.

abc7 news reporter allen wong has the story. in one year this young eucalyptus tree can grow four to six feet. they have taken over the hills and now uc berkeley and regional parks have a plan to remove about 80,000 nonnative trees. >> they can burn explosively. they have a volatile compound in their leaves. their bark is known as candle bark because it ignites. >> oakland and the east bay regional parks want to thin out the trees. >> fire risk mitigation program that preserve the tree canopy and preserves the understory. that, to us, is ideal. >> but u.c. berkeley wants to remove most of it's 22,000 eucalyptus and trees and restore native species like they did in the claremont canyon. >> these are much lower trees. they don't have the same bark shedding characteristics. they put far less litter out per acre per year in terms of grou

fuels. >> but opponents believe the native species are a greater fire threat. >> because all the trees have foliage at ground level they are ideal for propagating a fire. >> the federal emergency management agency is providing the money to cut down the trees and a final public meeting is scheduled at claremont oakland middle school. abc7 news. >> a record power ball jackpot is up for grabs tonight. an estimated $600 million. but along with your dreams of fabulous wealth, there are things to consider before plunking down two dollars four tick. abc7 news reporter reports from milbrae where sales are strong. >> ebb side liquor land on el camino and milbrae people are playing power ball with the hopes of winning the $600 million jackpot. >> i give to charity and family. i have family in third world countries >> but before you go out dishing

>> in southern california crews are battling the 575-acre

wildfire in the mountains in los angeles. more than 100 firefighters are fighting the flames from the water and from the air after it broke out along a lake. at one point the flames came within 100 yards of a school, but firefighters say the school was never in danger because dry brush had been cleared to create defensible space. the fire is now 60 percent contained. amtrak service has stopped between new york and boston indefinitely following a collision between two commuter trains in connecticut. 60 people were taken to the hospital. a train bound for new york derailed during rush hour and hit another train on the opposite track. the side of one train was shredded. >> all of a sudden we hear boom! and then we saw smoke everywhere. i was just focusing on my two

kids, hugging them and embracing them. >> people flew over, i almost flew over the seat but i held on. i'm okay. other people are hurt, though. >> the crash happened near fairfield about 60 miles outside of new york. the track sustained major damage. >> a huge financial loss for a school in san jose. dozen of stolen computers, and along with them students' year-end projects. abc7 news reporter vic lee with a story you will only see on abc7 news. i was just like shocked. i was, naa, somebody would do this to such a nice school? >> the 13-year-old came to school thursday morning and saw the smashed windows of the eighth grade computer rooms. all the laptops were stolen during the night. two cards containing 40 computers were cleaned out.

headmaster olaf jorganson said it looked like a professional job. >> they knew exactly where the computers were on the room and they seemed to get the computers off the campus quickly without any commotion. >> the mac book pros were purchased last summer. now with school almost out administrators are scrambling. we are trying to figure out ways to make computers accessible to the eighth grade for the next three weeks of school. >> what makes it crueler is all the eighth graders graduating on to high school lost their year end projects that they had been working on for a long time. >> definitely time-consuming. i spent a lot of time researching it. >> cameron was doing his project on major figures of the 50s and 60s. i had mohamed ali and it was like a twelve-point power point presentation. >> the theft has taken not only a financial toll on the small, private school, it's also left an emotional scar in this close-knit community. kim reynolds is president of the parents service auxiliary.

>> even the kindergartners were talking about it. it leaves a feeling of vulnerability and fear in our kids. >> of course, the school is talking to security consultants and like many schools this one had no alarm system. but they are looking at new technology. one of them is rather fascinating. this one will unable the laptop to take a picture of the thief if a stolen -- if a computer is stolen. and technology will enable that picture to go back to a security control center via gps. but that, of course, is in the future. for now the school is hoping that police and the public will help them recover their stolen computers. vic lee, abc7 news. today is stage 7 in the amgen tour of california is one of the most grueling day for the cyclists and will likely determine the winner of the entire race.

the 92-mile course makes a loop from livermore starting at north livermore avenue and cromwell way. it finishes atop mound diablo. a climb of nearly 4,000 feet. yesterday in san jose riders left the starting line. every minute for individual time trials on a difficult, hilly course. today they will have to paddle up mt. diablo where some of the largest crowds in the history of the tour turned out. this year's course follows the same route as last year but adds an extra five miles to the actual summit. maybe it's worth it. at the top on a clear day you can see for 200 miles. >> tomorrow morning the final lag of the race will start in san francisco and cross the golden gate bridge to santa rosa. also tomorrow the 102nd bay to breakers 12k race and that means street closers. you can get help navigating -- we just had a light blowout in the studio. you can get around with their waze trafficp.

f on apple store or from google play. always exciting things with bay to breakers and things actually breaking live in the studio. what's the weather like for tomorrow for the race? >> really nice. the shot this morning showing just how beautiful it is across the bay with golden sunshine. we will get to this in a mommy. first live doppler 7hd. the fog is with us just for a short time this morning. we have warmer temperatures for some this weekend, but high fire danger for all. the temperatures today should be right around normal. so the warmup really not getting underway for most of you until tomorrow. if you like it really warm. mt. tam, see cloudiness here with numbers ranging from the upper 30s in napa. 54 oakland with the clouds. san francisco 50. partly sunny. san jose 48. 46 santa cruz and 52 half moon bay. but this is what we've been really oohing and owing about all morning long.

the fog heading across the bay and temperatures on the cool side from santa rosa to napa. we're looking at this fog not lingering very long. but the onshore flow will so that's why temperatures will be kept in check today. tomorrow the winds will shift and we will have a strong northerly gradient slightly offshore by sunday night. gusty winds and we are looking at the warmest day for monday. so mostly clear. a little bit of patchy to go. warming trend begins today with the relative humidity dropping quickly and the gusty winds tomorrow night into monday. so this is how cool it's been this morning. anywhere from a degree cooler to 4 degrees cooler in mountain view and san jose. despite the sunshine a little bit of a chill out there. we are look being at san jose today in the mid-70 #* 70s. upper 70s tomorrow in the lower 80s on monday and the trend will be for cooler temperatures. a lot like last week with temperatures bottoming out come wednesday, thursday. most areas around the bay. so here's what's going on.

we have high pressure still offshore. it's keeping the storm track to the north and allowing for the gusty on shore winds this afternoon. but with plenty of sunshine. not much in the way of fog throughout the afternoon today. and then as it builds on in, gets closer to us, we are looking at temperatures coming up as much as five to ten degrees tomorrow. that will bring us above normal and then by monday we are talking perhaps a few 90s in our inland east bay. but today he's very mild here in the south bay. santa clara valley mid-to upper 70s down toward morgan hill and gilroy with 72 in santa cruz. so pretty nice out there. but if you are headed to the beaches, bring the jacket. it will be cool and a little bit gusty throughout the afternoon. 60 pacifica, 72 menlo park with 65 downtown. up in the north bay a few oranges and that means some warming for so mommia and santa rosa ated. low 10s oakland. 37 fremont. a little breezy around the bay with 78 concord. livermore will warm up for you today near 80 degrees.

>> we will started off with a quick look at the weather. here's meteorologist lisa argen. >> good morning. the temperatures are starting to recover in the north bay. we were down to 39 degrees in napa, but we are cooler for most this morning. 4 degrees cooler in mountain view. san jose nice and sunny right now. a little bit of fog. that will burn back quickly. we will see the gusty onshore winds keeping the numbers cool at our coast. it will be breezy if you are spending anytime around the bay. san francisco a high of 65, sunny, a little breezy. we will see sunshine all around the bay today. temperatures coming up from our cool readings of yesterday. that warming trend continues throughout the weekend. in fact into a portion of next week, as well. high fire danger will be with us as well. gusty, off short winds result before the weekend is up. i'll explain. katie. >> happening now, hundreds of people are waiting in line at the san jose convention center to see a dentist.

kira klapper is there live with more on a popular and free clinic. kira. >> hi, katie, good morning to you. one woman i spoke with was at the front of the line, she got here at 6:30 last night to be sure to take advantage of the free dental services. take a look at the line behind me. hundreds of people still waiting outside. the line is wrapped around the building, all four blocks around this building here in san jose. the doors to the clinic opened at 5:00 this morning. an hour and a half ago. we got to take a look inside. take a look at this video. about 800 dentists, dental high generalists and dental assistants are here to provide free services. the california dental association is putting this on for uninsured or underinsured children and adults to get treated. children under 18 must be with an adult. many of the people i spoke with out here in line are unemployed. they are uninsured. they are all thankful and they are looking forward to taking advantage of the free cleanings, the free fillings and free

ex-tracks. >> i'm unemployed so i couldn't afford it. it really means a lot. >> what are you going to get done today? >> i'm going to get my front teeth and my back teeth -- one of my back teeth pulled. we have bad teeth over here. all of a sudden i cracked a molar this the back and some are floating. i'm trying to figure it out before it all falls out. >> there are 100 chairs for 100 patients to be treated at a time it takes about three or four hours to get through the whole clinic. they are expect to go serve about 1,000 people today and 1,000 people tomorrow. it is first come, first serve so the people in line that maybe won't get in today, they are welcome to sleep over again to be the first in line tomorrow morning. fuld like to come down, you are also welcome to come camp out tonight or come tomorrow. the doors open at 5:00 a.m. we are here on south market in san jose. reporting live in san jose, kira

klapper, abc7 news. >> sounds like a great opportunity. thank you, kira. new this morning the redwood city police department and honda of redwood city of teaming up to keep kids safe with an event this weekend. they will be taking digital photos and fingerprints of children and providing safety information to families with the kids safe program. parents will take home a letter-size document with each child's picture and prints just in case that's ever needed. the free service is available from ten to four today at honda of led wood city. also new this morning, an anti-gay rights group in southern california has purchased hourly radio ads urging parents to copy third children home from school on harvey milk day, which is wednesday. the state-mandated education honors the san francisco supervisor who was a gay rights pioneer and the first openly-gay elected official in the state.

the ads by "save california" will not air in the bay area. they report they were purchased in los angeles and sacramento. they urge parents to protect their children from what they call in doctrination by keeping kids home from school wednesday. the guy rights group equality california said the campaign is homophobic and encourages discrimination. >> the head of the italian team is raising new concerns about the america's cup race on san francisco bay. he wants to race, but as abc7 news reporter mark matthews explains, he also wants to slow things down. >> his boat was just arrived in san francisco. they hope to have it on the water next week. speaking through a translator the head of the team says this is the type of boat that everyone agreed to sail. [foreign lang.] >> we are absolutely convinced that we must be true to the class of boat that is for america's cup.

the 1872. >> but he said he's also convinced changes must be made to increase the safety of the sailors. >> we want weather ambulance, we want professional drivers to be ready, and we want the paramedics to be on the water for the san francisco bay for all the sailors. >> and he wants a change in the wind speed limits, which right now top out at 33 knots. the italian team leader said that's too dangerous. >> what we propose is to lower them to 20 knots. >> the italians say if the wind is higher than 20 knots, they may not participate. i asked when would that decision be made? bertelli said it would be up to the team and the skipper. which means if there is not an agreement with oracle and other teams to lower the wind speed limit, the italian decision not to race could come on the day of the competition. that would play havoc with

oracle's ceo larry ellison's plans to make it a racing spectacular on television. he plans to start it on time to accommodate television broadcasts. asking what consideration he had for the concerns drew this quick and barbed response from the team's leader. >> we are not here to produce a show. we are here to sail, to race and win the america's cup. >> the accident that took the life of sailor simpson is being investigated by a panel of experts that will make safety recommendations, but they are just recommendations. they are not binding and it could come town to a showdown between ellison and bertelli but it's not there yet. abc7 news. in this morning officials say a us airway flight was forced to make a belly landing because of the landing gear had trouble. there is the belly landing right there. air-traffic controllers kept the plane in the air as they tried

to troubleshoot the problem. but of a several failed attempts at doing that, they made the decision to do the belly landing. there were 34 people on board. no injuries have been reported. passengers were evacuated from the airplane and bussed to the terminal. apple cofounder steve wozniack is returning to his alma mater this morning. wozniak, or "the woz" as sees no one is giving the commencement speech. we caught up with him yesterday to get insight as to what he plans to say to the new graduates. wozniak, who graduated in 1986, said the ups and downs is the biggest. >> change is the new norm. technology, every new product that comes out, it kind of changes how you do things, how you live and stabilizes for a while, like facebook. but eventually something might come along that totally takes away from that.

this weekend is the popular maker fair in san mateo. it's a wild gathering of intensely creative do-it-yourselfers, but most of them are men. engineering careers. in this morning's assignment 7 report, anchor dan ashley tells us how educators are trying to get girls interested early. >> there is a climbing wall inside this san jose garage. they use a computer to control l.e.d.lights to plot out which path to follow. >> really something that came down to lack of space and us being engineers. >> laura and matt are part of the maker movement, a growing fascination with building things yourself. they will show off their climbing wall at the annual maker fair in san mateo. the fair provided us with this video of last year's gathering which attracted 100,000 people. at this year's fair laura will stand out for more than just her

climbing wall. >> i wish there were more female engineers. >> the maker fair is one example of the gender divide in engineering. the society of women engineers says fewer than 18% of graduating engineers are women, and few are end up working in the field. just 13%. the creator of the maker fair wants to change that statistic. >> my goal is really that people cross over and try new things. we want to make everything kind of accessible so we aren't saying these are things that women do and these are things that men to. we want to get away from that and say this is something i like to do. so why not? >> research shows getting girls interested in science, technology, engineering and math while they are in middle school is key. >> is he helping you get this? >> at this school for girls in palo alto, the sixth graders are building boxes and learning to use power tools. >> it's not about boxes and tools.

it's about getting them to think spacially and to solve problems. >> angie heads up the lab. there is a lot of intricate problems you have to solve. wait, where does the hinge go, which side should it fit in? which side of the box should open. how do all these pieces fit together. the more practice we give them, the more advantage it is. >> they begin to think of themselves as capable, especially in an environment that has been traditionally male dominated. that they just feel more sure of themselves and more acceptable thinkers across the board. >> for these girls it's about thinking outside the box. >> it's cool to have a hands-on project like this where you are trying to build something with your hands. >> i think we can do things men do and should be giving opportunities for women to learn. >> that was dan ashley reporting.

peninsula. a little breezy. redwood city 72. mountain view 73. low 60s he is coast. sunny skies but you will need the jacket if you are headed out on the bay. it will be a little gusty. 65 downtown today. upper 70s for santa rosa, a little orange, bringing the warmth up through calistoga and napa. 9 there. 72 union city. fremont warming to 73, as well as cass vo valley. you head on inland you have mid-70s in the san ramon valley. upper 70s for livermore and close to 80. we will have that up by the delta today. a little breezy. if you are headed to oakland tonight in and around the 60-degree mark. a little breeze out there and dropping to the 50s by about 10:00. the look ahead, we will hit about 80 in oakland tomorrow. upper 80s inland and near 90 on monday. we are talking some very gusty winds sunday night into monday. so the relative humidity drops and those winds coming off the land. definitely be careful out there. but then we are cooler as soon as tuesday.
